I (Still) Don't Give Gifts to Kids (or Anyone)
And (still) no one is mad at me.
Welp, I’m already starting to see holiday gift guides in my inbox and my newsletter apps — how about you?
I have a love-hate relationship with gift guides, actually. Until recently, I would probably have said that I simply have a “hate” relationship with them — as in “I hate gift guides” — but my recent post and our recent discussion about how to resist consumerism helped me recognize it’s more complicated than that. I do grimly and judgmentally disapprove of society-wide mandates to amass consumer goods which, in many or most cases, the recipients don’t need and may not even want and which will inevitably push the items that preceded them closer to the landfill and also themselves end up in the landfill eventually — or else in a twice-Texas-sized gyre of microplastic debris in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. I do pretty much hate that.
On the other hand, I often open gift guides when I receive them. I’m curious! What cool stuff is out there this year?
